How to add page numbers to a PDF
Open the PDF
Drop the PDF onto the page, or click to choose it. It stays on your device.
Choose the style and position
Pick how the number reads — 1, Page 1, 1 of 10, Page 1 of 10, or roman numerals — and which corner or edge of the page it goes in. The pages beside the options show the numbers as they will be saved, with a close-up of the corner.
Set where numbering starts
To skip a cover page, click the start button on page 2, or type the page. To continue another document, set the first number. Choose alternating sides if you will print double-sided.
Add the numbers and download
Click Add Page Numbers and save the numbered PDF.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?
Open the PDF, choose the number style and position, and click Add Page Numbers. It runs in your browser, is free, and needs no account.
Can I start numbering on page 2 or from a different number?
Yes. Set Start numbering on page to 2 to leave the cover unnumbered, and First number to choose what that page shows. With Page 1 of N, the total counts only the numbered pages.
Can I use roman numerals like i, ii, iii?
Yes, in lower or upper case, from 1 up to 3999. To use roman numerals for a preface and ordinary numbers after it, number the front section first, then use Split PDF and Merge PDF to combine the parts.
Can I add a header or footer, not only numbers?
Yes. Choose My own text and write it, using {page} and {pages} for the numbers and {file}, {title} or {date} for the file name, document title and today's date. Put it at the top for a header or the bottom for a footer.
What do the numbers look like, and can I change them?
The default is 11-point black Helvetica, 12 mm from the edge. You can choose Helvetica, Times or Courier (regular or bold), a size, a colour and the distance from the edge.
Will the numbers cover my content?
They sit in the margin, close to the edge. If your content runs right up to it, a number can overlap. The preview and its close-up show whether it does before you save; if so, try another position or a larger distance from the edge.
Can I put page numbers on only some pages?
Numbering runs from the page you choose to the end. To number just a section, use Extract Pages to pull it out, number that, and Merge PDF to put it back.
Can I number a handout that has several pages on each sheet?
Number the document first, then make the handout with N-Up PDF. The numbers are part of each page, so they shrink with it and stay on the right page.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Add Page Numbers runs entirely in your browser: the file is opened and processed on your own device and is never sent to our server. More in the privacy policy.
