Page numbering made simple

Page and total

Numbers read like 3 / 12, so readers always know where they are and how long the document is.

Four positions

Bottom center, bottom left, bottom right or top center — the usual places for reports, theses and contracts.

Placed per page

The position is worked out from each page's own size, so documents with mixed page sizes are numbered correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What do the page numbers look like?

Black 12-point Helvetica, written as the page number and the total — for example 3 / 12 — placed 30 points (about 1 cm) in from the edge of the page.

Can I start from a different number or skip the cover page?

Not at the moment. Numbering always starts at 1 on the first page and continues through every page.

Will the numbers cover my content?

They're drawn in the margin, close to the edge. If your content runs right up to that edge, a number can overlap it — try a different position.

Are my files safe? Do you keep them?

Your file travels to our server over an encrypted HTTPS connection, is processed in memory, and comes straight back in the same response. It is never written to disk, nobody reads it, and nothing is kept once the request finishes. More in the privacy policy.

Is Add Page Numbers free to use?

Yes. Add Page Numbers is free, with no account to create and no software to install — open the page in a modern browser and start.
