How to remove metadata from a PDF
Choose a PDF
Select the document you are about to send, publish or submit. It stays on your device.
Choose what to remove
Document properties clears the title, author, software, dates and XMP. Everything also clears attachments, document scripts, thumbnails, the file identifier and the camera details inside embedded photos.
Read the list and download
The result lists what the file carried and what was removed. Save the clean copy and keep the original.
See what a PDF says about you, then remove it
A list of what was found
Nothing is removed silently. You are told which properties, blocks, attachments and photos held information, and what the tool does not reach.
Really gone from the file
The old values are dropped from the saved file, not just unlinked, so they cannot be read out of the bytes afterwards.
Photo details too
Phone and camera details such as the make, time and GPS position are removed from embedded JPEG photos without re-encoding them, so the picture is untouched.
Two levels
Clear only the document properties for an ordinary share, or choose Everything for a file leaving your organisation.
Frequently asked questions
What metadata does a PDF contain?
The document properties (title, author, subject, keywords, the application that made it and the software that produced the file, and two dates), an XMP copy of them, and sometimes more: custom properties, thumbnails, attached files, scripts and the details inside embedded photos.
Does it change the text or pictures on the pages?
No. Only information about the file is removed. A name typed in the text, a signature image or a watermark stays. To remove those, use Redact PDF.
Why does the result mention PDF/A?
A PDF/A file declares itself in its XMP metadata. Removing that block removes the declaration, so the copy is an ordinary PDF. Keep the original if you need the archival version.
Can I remove metadata from a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. The file has to be rewritten, which needs the password first. Use Unlock PDF, remove the metadata, and add a password again with Protect PDF if you want one.
Can I change the metadata instead of removing it?
Yes. Edit PDF Metadata sets a new title, author, subject, keywords or creator.
What does Everything delete that Document properties does not?
Attached files, document-level scripts, page thumbnails, private application data, metadata blocks on pages, images and fonts, the file identifier, and the camera details inside JPEG photos. Field and button scripts in a form are left alone.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Remove PDF Metadata runs entirely in your browser: the file is opened and processed on your own device and is never sent to our server. More in the privacy policy.
Is Remove PDF Metadata free to use?
Yes. Remove PDF Metadata is free, with no account to create and no software to install — open the page in a modern browser and start.
