How to repair a damaged PDF
Open the damaged PDF
Choose the original file, rather than a screenshot or a renamed document.
Rebuild its structure
QPDF attempts to recover readable objects and rebuild cross-reference information.
Inspect the recovered copy
Download the result and check every page. A successful rewrite does not guarantee that all original content survived.
What repair can and cannot recover
Recovery with QPDF
A dedicated PDF parser repairs structural damage that a simple file rename cannot fix.
Original left intact
The recovered file is a separate download. You can compare it against the original before replacing anything.
Honest recovery limits
Missing or overwritten bytes cannot be reconstructed. Unrecoverable files produce an error instead of an empty success.
Frequently asked questions
Can it fix a corrupt PDF that won't open?
Often, when the damage is structural: a broken or missing cross-reference table, or objects that are still readable. It cannot fix every kind of corruption, and it cannot recreate bytes that are missing.
Can it restore a missing page?
Only if the page data remains readable in the file. It cannot invent content that has been deleted or overwritten.
Will digital signatures remain valid?
Rewriting a PDF can invalidate an existing digital signature. Keep the original signed file and verify the recovered copy separately.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Repair PDF runs entirely in your browser: the file is opened and processed on your own device and is never sent to our server. More in the privacy policy.
Is Repair PDF free to use?
Yes. Repair PDF is free, with no account to create and no software to install — open the page in a modern browser and start.
