How to add a watermark to a PDF
Open the PDF
Drop the PDF onto the page, or click to choose it. It stays on your device.
Choose text or an image
Type the words to stamp, such as CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or your company name, or choose a PNG or JPG logo.
Set how it looks
Pick a position, an angle and an opacity, and watch the pages beside the options change to match. Repeat the mark across the page if you want a pattern, and choose whether it sits over the page's content or behind it.
Add it and download
Click the pages to mark, or pick none to mark every page, then click Add Watermark and save the result.
A watermark you control
See it before you save
Every page beside the options shows the watermark exactly as it will be saved, and updates as you change the text, size, angle or opacity.
Text or a logo
Stamp words in a font and colour you choose, or place a PNG or JPG image. A PNG with a transparent background keeps its shape.
Position, angle and opacity
Put the mark in any of nine positions, turn it to any angle, and set it from a faint 1% to solid. The default is a light grey diagonal at 30%.
Over or behind the content
Draw the mark over the page, or behind it so the page's own text stays crisp on top of it.
One mark or a pattern
Place a single mark, sized to fit the page, or repeat it in offset rows across the whole page.
Right way up on every page
Each mark is placed by how the page looks, so it runs the same way on portrait pages, landscape pages and scans saved on their side.

How do I add a watermark to a PDF for free?
Open the PDF here, type your watermark text or choose an image, and click Add Watermark. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and adds no mark of ours.
Can I use a logo or image as a watermark?
Yes. Choose Image, then pick a PNG or JPG. Set its width as a percentage of the page. A PNG with a transparent background looks best, and the image is processed on your device and never uploaded.
How do I make a watermark lighter, or put it behind the text?
Lower the Opacity — 30% is the default and 10% is very faint. Choose Behind the page's content to paint the watermark first, so text lies over it. Behind is hidden wherever the page has a solid background or a full-page image, such as a scan.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Click those pages in the preview, or type them in Pages to mark, for example 1, 3-5. Pick none to mark every page.
Which characters can I use?
Latin letters (including accents and Vietnamese), Greek and Cyrillic, numbers and punctuation, in Helvetica, Times or Courier — a small Unicode font is embedded when the text needs one. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and Indic scripts aren't supported yet — the tool names the text it cannot write. Use an image for those.
Can a watermark be removed, or does it protect my PDF?
It is drawn into each page, not added as a layer a viewer can switch off, but it is not copy protection: someone with a PDF editor could take it out. To keep a document from being changed or opened, use Protect PDF. To take sensitive text out for good, use Redact PDF.
How do I number the pages as well?
Use Add Page Numbers on the watermarked file. It can also stamp your own header or footer text on every page.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Add Watermark runs entirely in your browser: the file is opened and processed on your own device and is never sent to our server. More in the privacy policy.
