Split by Text

Split by Text cuts a PDF wherever a page contains a word or pattern: the first page of each invoice, a last page that says Signed, or a divider sheet. It reads the page text in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How to split a PDF by text

  1. Choose a PDF

Select a document made of several documents joined together, such as a batch of invoices or a scanned stack. It needs selectable text.

  2. Say where the cut goes

Type the text that marks the split, such as Invoice No., and choose whether a page with it starts a file, ends one, or is a divider that is left out.

  3. Download the ZIP

Each file holds the pages between cuts and is named for its pages, or for the text that marked it if you choose. The result lists the pages that matched, so you can check the cuts.

Cut a batch where the pages say to

Three ways to cut

A matching page can start a file, end a file, or be a divider that is left out of all of them, which suits scanned batches with separator sheets.

Words or patterns

Match words as typed, or write a pattern such as INV-\d{6} to catch every numbered invoice. Capitals are ignored unless you choose otherwise.

No page is lost

Pages before the first match, or after the last, are kept as their own file. Only divider pages are left out, and only when you choose that.

Checks itself and says so

You see which pages matched. A text that matches nowhere, or nowhere useful, is refused with the reason, and pages without text are counted.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on scanned pages?

Only on pages that have selectable text. A scan is a picture, so run OCR PDF first to make it searchable, then split. Pages without text are counted in the result.

What is the difference between starts, ends and divider?

A matching page that starts a file is the first page of it, such as an invoice header. One that ends a file is the last, such as a page saying Signed. A divider is a sheet between files, for example a scanned separator page, and is left out of all of them.

How do I split a batch of invoices, one file each?

Use the words that appear on the first page of every invoice, such as Invoice No., and choose that a matching page starts a new file. If the numbers differ, a pattern such as INV-\d{6} matches all of them.

Can I split at a page count or chapter instead?

Yes. Split PDF cuts by page or range, Split by Bookmarks cuts at chapters, and Split by Size cuts to stay under a file size.

Can I name the files from the text?

Yes. Choose to name each file by the text that marked it, such as INV-000101.pdf. With a pattern, put the part you want in brackets: Invoice (INV-\d{6}). Pages before the first match, which have no marker, keep a name made from their page numbers, and repeated names get _2, _3.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Split by Text runs entirely in your browser: the file is opened and processed on your own device and is never sent to our server. More in the privacy policy.

Is Split by Text free to use?

Yes. Split by Text is free, with no account to create and no software to install — open the page in a modern browser and start.

Choose what IwillPDF may use. You can come back and change this at any time from “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
